What NOT To Do At A Business Holiday Party.
A while back at an office Christmas party, I discovered one of our employees in a car — in front of our building — with one of our male vendors in what looked like a scene from a teen make-out movie.
I could not believe her indiscretion.
Some years later, I’d heard about an administrative assistant who lifted her shirt, while dancing at a corporate holiday event. The next morning she was excoriated…and later, let go.
Then there was the time when a Sr. male exectutive I worked for was photographed making out with a younger female employee at that holiday party. The next morning the photo was circulated around the office e-mail network.
Most recently, a young colleague of mine — at a dinner for vendors and sales people, spent the entire evening, on her cell-phone, sobbing and arguing with her boyfriend — he was annoyed that her job required that she attend so many social functions during the holidays.
What these scenarios have in common is alchohol, the holidays and, in some cases, inexperience.
Why do people misbehave so at these office gatherings? And why are young women in there 20s sometimes so misguided when it comes to acceptable corporate conduct?
If you would not act so foolish during dinner in April — what is it about the December business bash, that has people just lose their marbles? What exactly about the holidays says floozy?
To the young woman on the phone with her boyfriend, I have to say…when your company is hosting a sales event, it is expected that you will represent your company with dignity and class. And why are you even dating such a dope?
This is not difficult folks.
All people have to do at these things is dress respectfully, DON’T consume alchohol — or at least be mindful of what you are drinking — do some polite chatting, and go HOME.
And for gosh sakes! Keep your shirt on!
Chances are these things are held in the middle of the week…so do NOT, under ANY circumstances, call in sick the next morning.
Happy (hic) Holidays!

I guess I’ve missed out on all the excitement that happens at your parties, my husband’s crew tend to be a bit more straight-laced and uptight (nothing like a group of attorneys to liven up a party). Sounds like all the entertainment is going on in your neck of the woods. :)

Hi Michell,
Wall Street, Christmas, Bonuses and booze can tend to make things get out of control.
I have to say, I’ve never been a “girls gone wild” kind of party-goer.
