Underestimate Oprah?

It really annoys me that people will underestimate or dismiss Oprah.

When you underestimate Oprah, you underestimate women.

You underestimate women politically and underestimate women’s impact on the economy.

Go ahead men, roll your eyes when we say “I saw it on Oprah.” Do your “pshaw” minimizing all you want to. Discount women’s impact on the word at large.

Who do all companies want to hawk their product? How do you guarantee success of a book or product?

Oprah.

Check out this story on Ad Age about what PR people think about the opportunity to be featured on Oprah.

Think about this economically dependent housewife: there are two parts of our nation’s economy.

Making the money and spending the money.

Our nation’s economy is dependent on both.

Absolutely right, and it’s the same in the UK.

Look at the impact of Sex and The City - if you’ve watched it, you’ll have seen something on the show that took your fancy, then maybe gone out and bought it or its nearest equivalent. Look at how much SJP’s selling power is dismissed, on the basis of her ‘equine’ features: men so not want to believe someone they (apparently) consider a grade-A butterface can shift anything commercially, when in fact her likeability and everywoman charm is her main selling point, at least to women.

Then look at the James Bond franchise. Time after time, men are hawked watches and gadgets and cars and clothes by the ultimate Alpha male. Correct me if I am wrong, but that seems to be taken way more seriously than what us mere women happen to like.

I mean, I don’t see the Ministry of Defence helping to advertise Oprah’s favourite things or SJP’s new fragrance any time soon…

I get a “pshaw” from whatever male thinks everything on Oprah must not be worth paying attention too.

Oh, I guess I haven’t heard that. That just defies logic. She’s been named among the top ten most influential women in business for the last several years. Her approval is sought out more than any other celebrity for marketing purposes.

My husband has a crush on Oprah. He says it is the big rack but I think it might be the big bank account.

When I mention Oprah to my husband, his eyes roll and then glaze over until I’m finished talking..

My husband respects and admires Oprah and is not ashamed to say it even in a room full of men. When we sit to watch TV after dinner he will often ask, anything good on Oprah today? LOL
He will often say, there is much to admire about that lady, and I agree.
