The Monday After

by Tracee Sioux on November 26th, 2007

andrea.jpgOnce or twice a year parts of my very large extended family descends on us and my world becomes a blur.

I spend most of my time at my grandmother’s house enjoying their wonderful company and making sure my kids get the maximum exposure possible to their cousins.

It’s delicious. Both literally and figuratively. We all make our very best dishes and snacking never stops.

You want the Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream, you just don’t know it, I told my cousin, It tastes just like the past.

Oh, my gosh! It does. I didn’t even remember this until I tasted it!

You might drown in laughter.

You can wrap yourself in belonging like a hand-stitched quilt.

You might flash back 30 years when you see a grandfather sharing pieces of orange with toddlers. You remember opening your mouth for bites of yummy sweet. You remember a different grandfather. Different, but the same.

I don’t clean my house, do laundry, run errands, grocery shop or any other thing that can conceivably wait.

We soak up their presence, knowing they will leave and we will have plenty of time for chores the Monday after. It often takes me a week to get caught up with my regular duties.

It’s totally worth it.
