Manual for Motherhood

Buy The Mothering Heights Manual for Motherhood Volume 1 because I was almost in it. If you buy it, maybe she’ll publish another one next year and then I can be in that one.

Also I hate to see writers take on the risk of self-publishing and not even breaking even. She needs to sell 1,000 […]

Blogging Friends Real?

So my friend Mrs. Blogoway tells me, at our last bookclub - slash - wine tasting, that she’s been talking to this Seattle blogger on the phone. And that she’s got a layover in Seattle coming up and she called her blogger friend, Mona from kirida.com, and they’re going to hang out.
Cool.
But, then […]

35th Birthday

I turned 35 on Saturday.

We had a California picnic at the lake.

My husband got me this fabulous Momsrising.org T-shirt.

Of course, what I want for my birthday is equal pay, family leave insurance, and gender equality. It’s not just a t-shirt. It’s political action.

He gets me.

When I was a teenager I thought I’d be stupid […]

Chevy Hybrid Cost Analysis

So, Chevy allowed my family to drive a Chevy Tahoe Hybrid across the country, from Dallas to Salt Lake City, on our way to BlogHer08. You can’t imagine my gratitude (My 1995 van broke down right before we left and we just found out it will cost $900 to fix the air conditioner.)
I was […]

Sacrifice, “It’s Worth It”

I hear mothers talk about how sacrifice is “worth it” for their kids. I especially hear this if mother’s have given up something valuable - economic independence, dreams, ambitions, time, goals, careers, autonomy, hobbies, interests, etc.
When did I - as a human being - lose my inherent value? Was it when I stopped […]

Kindergarky

In The Weekly Standard is a very interesting article, The Kindergarchy, by Joseph Epstein, which illuminates how parenting has shifted into making kids believe they are the Center of The Universe. Which is really not in their best interests.

What I have in mind is something more endemic–a phenomenon that affects large stretches of the middle […]

Act NOW for Equal Pay Act

This just in from Momsrising.org.
Flex your pointer finger for another mighty click to send a second letter on wage discrimination to Congress at Paycheck Fairness Act.
What’s it all about? Quite simply, the Paycheck Fairness Act is the granddaughter of the Equal Pay Act of 1963-the original “equal pay for equal work law” […]

Emily’s List - Come On Girls!

Remember the Boston Tea Party?
The tag line was No Taxation without Representation!

During women’s suffrage No Taxation without Representation! was a tagline also used to get women the vote.
Of course, men’s response back then was “you don’t work, you don’t pay taxes.”
Except that now 72% of us do work and all of us […]

Keira Stands Up For Her Girls!

“Keira Knightley has refused to allow any enhancement of her cleavage on publicity photos for her upcoming movie, “The Duchess,” Britain’s Daily Mail reports via The Huffington Post.

Good. For. Keira! I agree, you ARE good enough as you are.

Photo source: The Huffington Post, publicity stills for “King Arthur” before and after digital enhancement.
