Small Business Pitfalls.

Whenever I tell someone that I have my own business, (and no, it’s not a pawn shop) often the responses are amazingly similar:

Wow you are so lucky! or I’d do anything to be able to work from home so I wouldn’t have to deal with morons every day…and my personal favorite, do you think solar-operated soda machines would make a good business? (Um…sure, why not?).

It took me a really long time for my psyche to catch up with my business idea. For the most part, I had been “climbing that ladder” in corporate-ville…until the day I decided to jump off.

And it’s true my new life can be pretty wonderful: I set my own hours, I pretty much tell others what to do, I get great feedback about my products — I can even develop product ideas while at the salon. Sounds great doesn’t it? What would I have to complain about?

Here’s one thing that no one lets you in on when you are thinking about starting a business. Isolation.

There are days when you feel so isolated that you’ll strike up a conversation with just about anyone…just ask my postal guy. Even when you’ve begged the lord for some alone time, this isn’t what you had in mind. There are days when I’m literally reading copy to my dog. (Labs are good listeners.)

I’m guessing it’s sort of similar to when a young woman leaves her high-powered job, has the child and then finds out there are no adults to talk to.

So, what did I do today? I submitted my resume to a recruiting firm, just to see what would happen. And guess what? I got a call.

What are my salary requirements, how far would I commute, oh and what are the 2 missing years on your resume? Asked the earnest little recruiter person, who was half my age.

That was IT, (Not the I.T. department) that was all I needed to get knocked back to the reality I created for myself: Small At Home Business Owner.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could start up a new business at a company that is run and owned by small business owners? Then you’d have somewhere to go everyday — besides your dumpy den, there’d be people, PEOPLE and maybe if you’re lucky a coffee guy?

Hey, I think I just came up with a new business opportunity!
