Sexy Isn’t Better At Work

by Christine(Yuna) on January 4th, 2006

Sharon Stone sexyI have worked in ultra conservative and super relaxed environments from east coast all the way to the sunny California. I have spent time working with both sloppy dressers wearing flip flops and clean cut guys in dark suits. I actually have never seen anybody dressing super sexy and showing cleavage at work until today. Actually, I didn’t even know the girl. We were heading back to our office from the cafeteria. A girl was standing there chatting with her co-workers in the lobby. She was wearing a tight brown shirt with a huge cut around her chest area exposing half of her perfect C+ large breasts. I’m no gay but I still gave her a good 2 second look. I am sure my type of “check out” was very much different from my male co-workers who spent well beyond 2 seconds to check her out.

“Ok my gosh! Did you see that?” The guys were talking between them.

I am sure this girl caught enough attention at work today. However, I am wondering if this is sort of attention she really needs.

USA Today has an article titled as “Study says flirtatious women get fewer raises, promotions” to show the negative consequences of being sexy at work:

In the first study to make plain the negative consequences of such behavior, 49% of 164 female MBA graduates said in a survey that they have tried to advance in their careers by sometimes engaging in at least one of 10 sexual behaviors, including crossing their legs provocatively or leaning over a table to let men look down their shirts.

The other half said they never engaged in such activity, and those women have earned an average of three promotions, vs. two for the group that had employed sexuality. Those who said they never used sexuality were, on average, in the $75,000-$100,000 income range; the others fell, on average, in the next-lowest range, $50,000 to $75,000.

Here is the complete article if you are interested in the study.

What is my personal opinion? I think dressing up in style definitely helps us to advance, mainly because we gain self-esteem by feeling good about ourselves. That’s why I like knee length designer skirts with tighter shirts. Unless we work in a non-conventional or non-corporate environment, it is wiser to cover up all of our breasts and most parts of our legs and tell our male co-workers “Good job!” instead of “Hot stud”.

This is so true, I started wearing my leather crotch-less chaps to work on a regular basis, my performance reviews just went straight down the toilet. Literally, I had to sign the last one with the plumber. I thought the boss liked me, turns out he was just being friendly.

We once had an intern whose family was from NYC. So, she dressed the part: high fashion sexy skirts - th eworks. It made a lot of folks uncomfortable and her mentor was asked to talk to her about it.

Of course I don’t think we ladies have it as easy as the men. They can wear the same white shirt and dark pants (or khakis) day in and day out and no one really notices the difference. We women usually have to change up our styles, have coordinating outfits, and at least look a little different every day. Wouldn’t you agree?
