No More Lonely Saturdays!

by Christine(Yuna) on November 20th, 2005

lonely ladyIt was a perfect Saturday. The sun was shining upon my head and I felt so energetic to go to the mountains, smell the nature and hug the trees. The only problem? I didn’t have anyone to go with. Damn it!!!

I was new to this Colorado town. Although I have a handful of close friends, they are all scattered around everywhere on the east coast. Every time I moved to a new place with the job, finding new friends to hang out with was pain in the ass!

I had a few lonely Saturdays initially and I am telling ya, it really sucked! I wanted to go out and have a good dinner but was too chicken to sit in the restaurant alone. I went through my Netflix 3 DVDs in one or two nights! I wanted to go rock climbing but I’d crash my bones if I didn’t have a partner. I wanted to host a dinner party and enjoy the wine with a few friends. I went through my cellphone contact list and the only people I could call were about 900 miles away. “Ok, DVD time again… ” Yep, those lonely painful Saturdays…

When I was looking for a roommate to share an apartment with about 9 months ago, I found this guy Stephen on the Internet. Although I didn’t take his condo, he did invite me to an overnight snowboarding trip with his friends. I was scratching my head, “Umm, I only know you for 15 minutes, and I don’t even know how a snowboard looks like…and you want me to take off with bunch of strangers at 9pm heading over to the pitch dark mountains!?” Well, considering that Stephen was also a fellow consultant and he seemed to have all the consulting business jargons spitted out correctly, I figured he couldn’t be one of those serial killers. Plus, his female friend would go as well. Well, maybe the risk was worth taking.

Ok, snowboarding rocks!!! Although I didn’t see Stephen very often after the trip, I got to know Mike and Matt through him. Mike(Heavywinter) is the guy who got me into this blogging business and co-designed this Fabulous logo you saw on the top of this blog. Matt became a close friend who helped me to settle down in Denver and taught me how to snowboard. Through them, I met a LOT of fabulous people and my lonely Saturdays started to disappear. Since then, I started to use Internet to find people to do things together. Now, I probably know a dozen good climbers around the area whom I can call on a Saturday afternoon for a Sunday climb.

So should I be happy now that I have so many boarders, climbers and bloggers to hang out with? Well, I am happy but there is still something missing here. I don’t have close girlfriends to hang out with. Girls are important to girls. I am longing for a Saturday that I can go to a pedicure and manicure with my girlfriends and just chit chat. Girls give girls the kind of support that guys can’t give. So I am on a quest again in seeking of a circle of supporting girlfriends.

Internet is a powerful tool. But in my case when I just want to find friends, Match.com actually totally sucks. Thanks to the input from my friends, here are some really cool national websites that are designed to allow people to meet in events based on their own interests. You can also host events or find people to go to public events with. A few I like:
www.meetin.org
www.denverlinkup.com (on the side bar you will find other cities as well)
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/coloradoskibuds/ (You can go to groups.yahoo.com to find the specific group or start your own group)

meetin.org is by far the most active site I have ever seen. In addition to the new member event I will attend in a couple of weeks, I am also going to a Karaoke party right after Thanksgiving. Do I know anyone? No. But it’s OK. After singing “She Bangs” in William Hung style, we all gonna know each other pretty well, I hope. :-)

Haha! Thanks Liz! This is a much better spot to home some of the topics that concern the working women and continue having the office jokes… I am glad I am given this opportunity…

Christine, didn’t I see a pic of you rock climbing somewhere? Wow, so impressive–great writer and an extreme sportist. ;)

Thanks Rhys, I actually have a photo site with all the outdoor climbing I did in the past summer:

I really don’t think rock climbing is that extreme considering all the ropes and knots I tie to myself.. :-) Those people who jump out of the cliffs are kind of nuts…hehehe :-)
