Kick Your Box!

by Tracee Sioux on March 19th, 2008

kick boxingYou should never hit anyone. Don’t kick. Play nicely. Screw that. It may come as a surprise to you but recently I’ve unearthed this latent desire to seriosuly kick someone ass! Okay, it’s probably no surprise.I’m taking a kickboxing class at my gym and I’m loving it.Has it occurred to anyone else how ludicrous it is that women are most likely to be attacked and least likely to learn how to fight? Duh.Even more ludicrous is the fact that I have been attacked - more than once and this is the first time I’ve taken any type of self defense class. Ditto Duh. When I am in my kickboxing class I feel physically powerful.  Maybe for the first time ever. It’s revolutionary to think of my body in the context of strength instead of the context of appearance.  For a whole hour I’m learning to kick someone in the face and it’s so much fun! Aggression will grow on you if you let it. Once you get over the embarrassment of making a big gutteral UUUUGH sound as you kick the trainer it’s so much fun to make contact. The next time you want to kick a little harder, throw a fiercer punch, put more power behind it. After a few times you realize you kinda want to knock him to the ground. Maybe make him cry. Then you realize you’ve had this anger your whole life. That it’s always been coped with, repressed, shamed, oppressed and managed. To express it? Feels so much better. Weirdly, I’ve never felt less angry and more at peace. Perhaps all that anger just needed a productive and appropriate place to go?

With the state of the economy as it is, including the price of gas and heating oil (why do I live in the frigid Northeast?), the high cost of health care, and an administration that doesn’t seem to have a clue, or is just playing it that way; along with the daily struggles of getting 2 kids under 5 out the door alone 4 days a week, with snowsuits and hats that they hate (again, why do I live in the Northeast?), and trying to get to work, where I am the only one who hasn’t had time to check her teeth for the breakfast I just wolfed down in the car, a little kick boxing certainly sounds like a great outlet……

Vem - I see you totally Get it. It’s something productive to do with all that stress and anger. UUUGH!

I love kicking people in the face. I had problem with this as a habit a few years ago, but man, that look in their eyes when they see your boot coming for them. “Is this guy for real?” At that point, it’s too late. They’re on the pavement crying, cursing at me, like it’s going to hurt me or something. They just got kicked in the face!

Lets go out this weekend and find some bad guys, how about it? :)
