Gwen Stefani Should Take A Stand For Women
Is anyone else wondering why Gwen Stefani is saying nothing about Akon simulating a rape on a 15-year-old girl during his opening act of her concert last month?
Akon has reportedly issued a statement saying a 15-year-old shouldn’t have been allowed in the club and he’s sorry.
I don’t think it would be much better if he had simulated a rape, a person held the girl down while Akon pretended to have sex with her, of a 35-year-old woman either. Nor do I think it would be fine if it was just objectifying a consenting woman just for his pleasure.
I’m about sick to death of the glamorization of violence against women. I say three cheers to Verizon for pulling out their sponsorship of the tour. But, why can’t I find a single comment from Gwen Stefani?
Is she okay with this type of behavior just because it’s making her money? As a hugely-popular female rock star should she have a responsibility to ensure her supporting acts keep their stage acts respectful toward women?
One of my biggest issues with the planet today is that women don’t have each other’s backs. We rarely stand up for each other. We rarely insist that men raise the standard in the ways they treat women.
I find it quite simple to boycott both Gwen and Akon since they are not my favorite artists and frankly, I can’t figure why Akon is so popular anyway. But, really I would like to know, is Gwen supportive of Akon’s behavior?
I suppose I just want women who have the power of success to look out for other women.
