Curl Maintenance

by Tracee Sioux on August 15th, 2007

There were a few things about giving birth that I didn’t expect. Well, there were lots of shocking things about birth, but I’ll focus this column on two of them.

First, my feet grew an entire size with each pregnancy. Before I had children I had a size 7 - 7.5 foot. I recently bought a pair of pumps in 8.5 and most of my other shoes are size 8.

The other is that my perfectly straight hair transformed into naturally curly hair. With my first pregnancy I got a little natural bounce, but this pregnancy changed the entire nature of my hair from straight to curly.

I’m not complaining, I spent pretty much the entire ’80s and part of the ’90s trying to chemically manufacture this look.

Still, it’s a learning curve. Straight hair is low maintenance. Wash, condition and brush the tangles out. That’s all I really had to do before. It was very hard to learn to comb rather than to brush my hair. This last year I’ve stopped women all over town to ask how they take care of their curly hair and what products to buy.

There are 2 curly hair products every curly haired vixen should try because they work, at least for me.

  •  Frizz-Ease Extra Strength Serum 1.6 oz. This is a little pricey at $8-10 (I told you before, I am CHEAP!) for two weeks of oil. But, I can’t even comb my hair out without the Frizz Ease anymore. It’s HUMID in East Texas.
  • Tigi Catwalk Curls Rock Curl Amplifieris a little expensive at $15 for 4 ounces. I don’t buy it all the time, but it defines the curls while keeping them separated and well, amplified. It’s got a texture that’s just gross enough to make you wash your hands after applying, but not gross at all once it’s on your hair.

I have never heard of someone going from straight to curly! Lucky duck. All I went from was straight and thin, to straight and thinner.

I think your hair is quite lovely btw.

My hair is curly now, too. I have to apply a straightening product and then blowdry with a round brush to get the curl out. It’s unbelievable! My mom used to have to give me home perms. Now I have naturally curly hair (after one kid)!

My question Crystal is why you’re not embracing your new curly hair? Why use the straightening product and the blowdrier? Why not a difuser and curl amplifier?

    Curls are sexy and FUN!

I think it’s kind of cool to have whole new hair in my mid-30s than I did growing up. I liked my hair then too though.

One thing we should try to do as women, I think, is embrace the beauty we have, rather than struggle to fit someone else’s beauty mold. I guess I don’t get why everyone wants straight hair these days. Actually I don’t get why everyone wants the same hair as everyone else.

But, you would know more about hair and what people are doing to it and how they are wearing it than I would, as hairdresser.
