Charm Necklace
What are the kids wearing these days?
Well, jelly bracelets are in, Mohawks, lots of rock n’roll black featuring AC/DC and Ozzie, low hip belts, chunky neon colored beads, really long t-shirts, necklaces made out of pop can tops (this time around they are from colorful Monster Energy Drinks) and even a chain here and there.
Whenever I go hang-out at the youth outreach I feel like I’m back in junior high. Seriously, it’s like these kids stole my dream wardrobe from 1983. I love the clothes now every bit as much as I did then, although I will never dislike myself enough to wear stretch pants again. What are they calling them now? Leggings, I think.
My mom had saved this charm necklace from those days. All the kids are so envious of my real vintage charm necklace. (I’ve become vintage.) The iconic symbols of the culture stayed very much the same: television (mine has no remote), phone (still has a cord), shoes (exactly the same ballet flat).
The really funny part is the symbol of the fried egg. Like, why was that ever considered cool? Like, didn’t they know you can’t eat egg yolks and you certainly can’t get away with frying them. Duh.
