Barbara Walter’s Bi-Racial Affair

Did you all see Barbara Walters on Oprah yesterday?
Just the sight of these two trailblazers for women in the media made me a little teary. I was so proud of both of them. So grateful too.
Was anyone else as fascinated by their candid discussion about having affairs with married men?
In case you missed the news, Barbara had an affair with the first black Senator, Edward Brooke. Her affair inspired him to ask for a divorce. The divorce caused Brooke not to be reelected.
Did you notice how both of these highly successful women felt deeply that it was worse to be economically dependent on a man than having an affair with a married one?
Barbara said she didn’t regret the affair, which was exciting and wonderful. She regretted that Brooke, who was a wonderful Senator, didn’t get reelected.
I found the entire interview fascinating actually. Usually Barbara is such a closed book. I found what she had to say about both Rosie O’Donnell and Star Jones to be balanced and positive.
I definitely want to read her book Audition: A Memoir

I pre ordered the book from Amazon and it was here Tuesday! I am going to dig into it this weekend. (mom’s day gift to me!)
I loved Barbara on Oprah as well as the interview with Charlie Gibson and Barbara last night on ABC. I still have them on my DVR and am going to burn them to disk. I laughed and cried during both of the shows. I have to keep them! I have always admired Barbara. She and Jane Pauley were my idols when I was a young girl. I wanted to “be on the news” as my mother says. LOL
From skipping through the book and the “teasers” on the interviews, ‘Audition’ is very juicy and I can not wait to fully start reading it. I’m sure I won’t be able to put it down!

Barbara Walter’s life was influenced greatly by her older sister and she’s written a beautiful memoir about her life. I read another memoir of a life influence by a sibling that I recommend highly - I actually liked it even more. The memoir is “”My Stroke of Insight”" by Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor. Dr Taylor became a Harvard brain scientist to find the cause and cure for schizophrenia because her older brother was a sufferer. Then, crazy as life can be, Dr. Taylor had a stroke at age 37. What was amazing was that her left brain was shut down by the stroke - where language and thinking occur - but her right brain was fully functioning. She experienced bliss and nirvana and the way she writes about it (or talks about it in her now famous TED talk) is incredible.
What I took away from Dr. Taylor’s book above all, and why I recommend it so highly, is that you don’t have to have a stroke or take drugs to find the deep inner peace that she talks about. Her book explains how. “”I want what she’s having”", and thanks to this wonderful book, I can!

JINX Mable - I was going to write about Jill Bolte Tayler this week.
I LOVE what she has to share with us.
I’ve both seen her college lecture and listened to the mp3s on Oprah.
I want what she’s having too! You’re right, we can all get it.
