Are You A Hard Worker?

by Kim on October 23rd, 2006

This is what my backyard currently looks like:

And this is what the inside of my house currently looks like:

Eventually, we hope to have a very nice patio…but in the meantime, it’s jackhammering, and sawing and dust from morning, non-stop until dinner time.

My complaints aside, what is interesting about this are the men who put in more than 12 hours a day, working on this project.

By no means do I wish to express thoughts or ideas about our national argument about illegal immigration…I simply want to point out how hard these guys work…and how badly I feel for them and how embarrassed I feel for us. I say that because I used to think that we (hubby and I) were hard workers…but we can’t even shine their shoes.

I gather that these gentlemen are from Latin America and that they may have citizenship issues — or maybe not — I don’t really get a chance to speak to them — as neither myself, nor they understand each other’s languages.

But as I struggle through the noise and sand (EVERYWHERE) I see these guys as people who are working harder than anyone I’ve ever known. Not only that, they seem pleased to be working! I hear them telling jokes in Spanish (although they could be making fun of the lazy woman who owns the house), they whistle and hum songs.

And so from now on, as I see them and their friends around town, mowing lawns, building patios, and even going out to dinner with their families in the evenings…I’d like to think that I can simply appreciate them, thank them…but mostly admire them. And perhaps I’ll put studying Spanish on my “life list.”

I always admire people who do physical labor type jobs. I guess it’s because I know I could never do it.

    Hi Kailani,

Me too, especially if they do as great a job as these guys did.

I am a hard worker, I believe in doing what I am being compensated to do. When I worked as a nurse I really tried to do my job, but also be there emotionally for the patient. It was hard and it was exhausting, but in a good way.

I have been a SAHM for over 5 years now, and am thinking about joining the work force again. Even though I work hard at home, I have a bit of me time during naps and school, the work is nothing like being a nurse. Going back to work should be interesting, lol. I’ve said before, and I say it again… I don’t know how moms that work full time do it all.

Senator McCain said it best when he challenged any of us to do the grunt work that these men do knowing full well they do the jobs that we refuse to do. I’ve wanted to learn Spanish for years and I keep telling myself I will….

    Welcome Mary!

I don’t have kids, but I certainly admire the work that all moms do…not to mention nurses in our country.

Shouldn’t it be that the folks we need the most, get paid the most? Moms, teachers, nurses?

    Stay well

Holly, I whole heartedly agree with the Senator!

Thanks for sharing. I completely agree. These guys that do the manual labor that no one else is willing to do, for very little pay I might add, do seem to define what it is to be a hard worker.

What I love is when the immigrants who make America what it is today are the same people on the treadmill next to me at the healthclub. That’s what makes this the greatest nation in the world. We’re still a melting pot.

    Hi Lisa,

I agree…I hope they don’t take it as insulting, but I gave them a bottle of champagne when they were finished.

    Thanks for stopping by.
