Add Women Change Everything!
O, The Oprah Magazine and The White House Project have joined together in a leadership training effort for women. They will be hosting Women Rule Leadership Training Program for 80 women with a vision June 20 - June 22 in New York City.
The stimulus has been this election season which has made clear that women are underrepresented in politics. Out of 50 (52?) states only 9 governors are women. We’ve fallen to 71st in the world according to female representation in political office. 71! It’s not just political, less than 3% of Fortune 500 companies are headed by women, only ONE Fortune 50 company is headed by a woman.
Our free market capitalism all too often capitalizes on OUR sexuality with advertising and games designed to convince girls their highest aspiration should be to be the best MissBimbo. We need to get involved in all aspects of our own society and lay some claim to our own damn values and stop allowing them to define us in such derogatory ways.
Come on, Ladies, I want to see some housewives run for office and be heard. Take charge of your local school board or city council! I want to see more companies run by women. I want - crazy - a 50% female congress that represents our equal stake in our country.I want women to be part of the creative process in the media so my daughter and I aren’t stuck with “ultra-sexy seductress” or “traditional homemaker” as characters in movies, advertising and marketing. I want women to get into science labs and include females equally in research.
Women Rule Leadership Training Program aims to provide 80 women with a dream of change the resources and training they need to seek it. I have applied to be one of the 80 women to expand my dream of sparking a Girl Revolution. My dream and vision is to use So Sioux Me to reach parents and give them powerful resources and action steps that empower their daughters to grow up and be confident leaders. Please put your good thoughts, prayers, powers of attraction into my application because I know I can make a huge impact on how we perceive the value of girls in this country.
That leaves 79 slots open to a woman exactly like YOU.
Yeah, YOU.
Why not you?
If not you, then who?
Yet another man who doesn’t understand the value of the feminine perspective? We have the girl-minimizing Disney Princess Culture because Disney had a policy against women in the creative process. We’re left with medications designed for men and ineffective for women because they never thought to include women in medical research. It’s so absurd it’s stupid.
Surely, you can see how ADD WOMEN CHANGE EVERYTHING can literally, well, change everything. For us. For our daughters. Hell, for our men and boys who love us and want the best for us. I want my son to marry a girl that hasn’t been minimized, victimized or damaged by gender inequity. Is that so crazy?
Come on women this is no time for apathy.
You fill out an online application outlining your dream and experience. Submit a resume or biography and a headshot and hit “submit.” (It’s a rare instance when I take pleasure and hope out of that loaded word.)
Friday, April 11 is the deadline. Attendees get free hotel, food and training. Attendees have to pay their own flights. 10 travel scholarships will be awarded based on financial need. Apply Here Now.

Because they want to choose women from all ethnic and racial backgrounds. Which is also useful for the same reasons it’s useful to include both genders.

I’m sick of seeing boobs every time I turn on my television, but would it REALLY change the film industry by having more women in congress? Does it REALLY matter if the congress person is male or female? All along I thought that it was the issues that mattered. I see what you’re saying, but having a legislature full of women doesn’t mean that anything will change. Electing RESPONSIBLE politicians who don’t have interest groups whispering in their ears is the answer.

If you’re sick of it - why don’t YOU run and demand more respect for women on television? Better ratings systems that really protects our kids (ie:why is Girls Next Door allowed to be Not Rated?) The FCC is one of the most pathetic and ineffective institutions in our government.
There are men running the companies who put the boobs on your TV and men running the government that allows it.
Having women in office and corporations doesn’t guarantee no boobs on TV (BET is a huge example) - but I think I like the odds better. I think there is ample evidence that men alone aren’t going to look out for women’s bests interests and maybe it’s time we started looking out for our own.
If you like how things are going now - well, no need to do anything about it. But, if you really are sick of it - well, maybe it’s time to BE the responsible politician you’re looking for.

Sunny, I understand and agree with what you’re saying about responsible politics..but you know, maybe the fact that women aren’t very well represented is contributing to the sweeping aside of issues that effect us women.

Yes, Yes, and YES. I agree with what you all are saying, and if I wasn’t in college, then I just might run for office, but I’m trying not to put the horse before the carriage here.
My point is this: a bad legislator is a bad one- whether it be a man or a woman. Instead of making the issue about gender, I think it is time to get the “old folks” out of office, and put in people who are going to fight for what we want! People who know what American’s want! I’m 100% behind Hillary Clinton- but not because she is a woman, but because I agree with her platform. Voting for ANYONE based on their gender, race, or age is ridiculous. As women, it is our responsibility to get out and vote, campaign, do whatever we can to fight for our rights.
In regards to the FCC, I really don’t know what to say. I think that there are morally insensitive, money hungry executives that know what sells. IF people would quit watching, then we wouldn’t have these shows on television. BUT, there is clearly a demographic(I don’t know what that
demographic is) that enjoys trashy television.
And Tracee, I think that there are many people who try to get out and run for office, but the voters are not getting. There is a system set up to allow the people to achieve change, we’ve just got to take advantage of it!

In regards to gender Sunny - and I’m a fan of both genders - anytime you exclude one gender you will have a negative result. Look at the result of fathers not being in African American homes - it’s a crisis of epic proportions.
Do not take what feels like equality for granted. Your argument will, I desperately hope, ring true someday. But the fact is, as the American Association of University Women says, Equity is still an Issue.
None of your rights, as a woman, came easy or free. Every single one was hard won and fought for by a generation of women before you who knew gender matters.
I desperately hope college girls like you don’t take those rights for granted or underestimate the work that still needs to be done on the gender equity front. Mainly, because we need you.

Tracee-
What do you think about the raids on the FLDS community in Colorado City? Since we had our little debate the other day, women’s rights has been on my mind. I read a book, ESCAPE, about this community and was overwhelmed when I heard that these women may have the chance to be free.
Do you have to say about this in the arena of women’s rights?

It’s an interesting question Sunny.
I think we should listen to what the women who escape are telling us.
Criminalization of polygamy is creating a need for isolation and secrecy in the families and the compounds.
Isolation and secrecy are the breeding grounds for abuse of women and children.
Polygamy is their religious belief and they are going to do whatever they feel have to to protect it.
I think polygamists are right when they say - Hugh Hefner can get a TV show for having a harem of women, so why are they being prosecuted? They create no more of a burden for society than say serial monogamists who get many different women pregnant without marrying them or providing for them.
The women who escape from abusive situations tell us that decriminalization of polygamy is the answer. I think we should believe them.
