5 (6) Cures for Back Pain

by Tracee Sioux on August 13th, 2007

pink-hair-blog-flat.jpgI’m a huge success story when it comes to back pain. Through my mid- to late-20s I had excruciating back pain that seemed to have no end. The culprit? Well, it depends who you ask. When I got off a roller coaster I had terrible pain and I never recovered. The doctor said the roller coaster wasn’t really the problem, an unergonomic 1960s work station was my real enemy. I believe this combination of five things will provide at least some relief, if not a total cure, to anyone experiencing back pain.

1. Memory Foam Mattress Pad. I can literally tell a difference in as little as one night. I don’t wake in the night with pain anymore.

2. Ergonomic Office Chair. Yes, I’m the lady who shows up for the first day of work with her own chair. I know this about myself - I can not sit in a crappy chair for 8 hours and suffer no pain. And if you suffer from back pain, neither can you.

3. Chiropractor. Oh, the doctor told you they don’t help? You’re not sure you believe in them? You’re still in pain aren’t you? So, did the doctor actually do anything to help or just give you some pills to pop and tell you to think about surgery? That’s what I thought. If you’re in real pain, and you’re tired of being in pain, you’ll do yourself a favor and go see a chiropractor. At first, you may have to go quite often. Ideally, you’ll get to the point where you only have to go if you pull your back out. Insurance does cover the chiropractor.

4. Yoga. Strengthening the back is the key to long-term back pain relief. You could lift weights to strengthen your back muscles, but you run the risk of harming yourself further. Yoga is no-impact and low risk. Yoga stretches the muscles gently while strengthening.

5. Heat. For instant relief heat really does help. If you don’t have a hot pad you can pop a wet dish towel in the microwave for a few minutes. To stay dry put the towel in a zip lock bag. A hot bath or shower helps.

Constant and chronic pain changes the color of the whole world. Everything seems a bit muted and more depressing. I empathize with anyone who suffers from the same pain day after day.

Yet, what’s fascinating is that I’ve given lots of people the recipe for back health and no one wants to try it. The vast majority don’t even want to try 3 out of 5 or 2 out of 5 of my suggestions.

It’s made me examine people’s relationship to their own pain and what they are getting out of it. Empathy, sympathy, and the right to complain pop to mind. Physical manifestation for anger is another theory that’s getting scientific backing. Simple attention is a likely motivator. Camaraderie and a sense of bonding with people who share the similar types of pain. Maybe you feel acknowledged when significant people murmur their prayers or concern about your pain.

Then I wonder, what would a world be like where you just got acknowledgement, attention, empathy, sympathy, camaraderie, and bonding without the pain?

Obviously, I believe the pain is real. Of course, pain exists without a hole in the soul creating it for an emotional payoff (you break your leg, it’s gonna hurt right?). But, sometimes I think pain can be the inner self’s cry for something else. To that end, wouldn’t you have to be willing to give up the pain? Might that be similar to weaning off of other emotional crutches like smoking?

6. Take an emotional inventory of your pain. Are you getting any positive reinforcement out of it? Are you getting attention or sympathy from others because of it? Most important - are you willing to give it up?
