Motherhood - paid nothing, worth nothing?

A friend forwarded me a column by ROBYN BLUMNER, who says stay-at-home moms are worth  - ”nothing.”
This is in response to the whopping $138,000 that Salary.com claims at-home-mothering is worth based on the many roles moms fill. Blumner writes, “stay-at-home moms need to understand the reality of their choice. They are handicapping their future financial security and that of their children by being […]

HPV Vaccine, Girls’ Right to Health

Good Morning fabulous people! If you’ve ever checked out my blog So Sioux Me, you know that I have a special place in my heart for girls.
I posted an article this morning about my disappointment that a vaccine to prevent HPV (human papilloma virus) which causes cervical cancer has morphed into an argument about whether girls […]

Beauty Carnival

Thought I’d let you all know about a blog carnival I’m participating in The Fabulous! Festival of Fashion.
A blog carnival is where bloggers submit a topic related post to a central location. The reader has the benefit of finding a bunch of information about a topic in one place.
This one promises to have all the […]

Abundance

At my last book club the conversation drifted away from the book and wandered into stay-at-home mom sacrifices.
A fellow stay-at-home mom, part-time preschool teacher, said this, “Whenever I start feeling bad about not having as much money as everyone else or going without a nicer house I just think, “I live in the United States […]

Mirrors of Momness

dsc08807.JPGToday my husband and kids made me blueberry pancakes and sausage. We went to church. I got a bookmark. We spend some family time driving around looking at houses and then came home. I spent the rest of the day reading a good book in bed with few interruptions. They cleaned the house.
My husband won […]

10 reasons to try Yoga

Since having my last baby a year ago I’ve taken up yoga. The gym I joined offers classes 3 times a week and watches my kids while I take them. My original motivation was the scale. Post-baby I wasn’t dropping the weight as I had expected, but was watching the scale creep dangerously close to 200 lbs. That […]

Alternative Medicine

This morning I noticed that my one-year-old son was breathing normally and without congestion.
Zack has been congested since birth basically. I’ve taken him to the doctor probably 4 times over his single year of life and he’s been prescribed 3 allergy medications. At $25 co-pays and $60 per prescription his congestion was getting costly.
I also […]

Green Clean

On Wednesdays I usually focus on getting the house clean. Mopping, laundry, vacuuming, scrubbing down the bathroom.
A few weeks ago Oprah did a show on how to be more green. You know, show love to Mother Earth by not trashing her. One of the segments was on green cleaning products. Products that don’t pollute the […]

Consequences

Tonight is our big mentoring banquet. I’m a mentor to one 14-year-old girl, but we meet as a group of four girls and four adults. At the end of the year we get dressed up, well as dressed up as the girls want to get, and going to a three-course meal with entertainment. It’s pretty exciting […]

Day of Rest

Sunday Calendar

Get up and get self and family ready for neice’s dedication at church.
Go to church. Runs way longer than expected, get called out to feed hungry baby in the nursery.
Buy a paper. Go through open house listings and circle a few.
Eat some lunch.
Drive around looking at two or three houses. No potential.
Race home to […]

Brain Fart

So, Saturday, maybe you read my post,I was up early just tinkering about. Letting my husband sleep in. Feeding the kids. Posting a blog. Thinking the day was starting out pretty good, just kind of mellow.
Then at around 9:45 am, hubby gets up and whispers in my ear, we forgot Ainsley’s last soccer game this […]

VH1 Baby, Trade Days, Slacks from Ross

My beautiful blond boy woke up screaming at 5 a.m. I tried everything. A sippy cup of milk, a tsp. of ibuprofen, some Origel, a pacifier, sleeping in our bed, walking him back and forth.
Turns out he just wanted to watch some VH1. I turned on the Jump Start music videos - why don’t they play […]

Pink Hair Fiasco Take 2

So, I decided to ask someone else to do my pink highlights again. Thank Goodness my previous disastrous Pepto Bismal meets Neon Nightmare washed out after only 3 washes.
So, this chick I know from my daughter’s school is a hairdresser and she invited me to her house to get them redone.
Everything seemed to be going so well.  […]

Fake Eyelashes

In an attempt to teach my daughter to be a little cynical when faced with unrealistic advertising I pointed out a mascara commercial.
The commercial was for Loreal Volume Shocking Mascara and the model was obviously wearing false eyelashes.
There is no way those are her real eyelashes, Ainsley. They put false ones on for the commercial […]

Influence the Collective Conscience of Girlness

I worry about the girls growing up today. Don’t you? I see celebrities getting thinner and thinner and the girls on the stripper pole in videos on BET and I worry about the teens and pre-teens who are forming their ideas of femininity with these images.
I worry about girls getting STDs from experimenting with love […]
