2006 Best Companies To Work For
Fortune just published a new list of the 100 Best Companies To Work For.
Here is the top ten list:
1. Genentech
2. Wegmans
3. Valero Energy
4. Griffin Hospital
5. W.L. Gore
6. Container Store
7. Vision Service Plan
8. J.M. Smucker
9. REI
10. S.C. Johnson & Son
I am very surprised that my employer, which used to be the best and biggest to work for in the last decade isn’t even on the top 100 list anymore. (To protect my privacy and avoid troubles, I can’t disclose my company’s name. )
Among the top 10, my favorite is REI. I have shopped there constantly in the last year and half to boost my mountaineering gear collection. I once took back a 5-month old rock climbing package including a tiny used chalk ball and beaten up equipments. All I wanted was a smaller size of harness, but they gave me a whole new package as a free exchange! No receipt was required either. Oh,and I got a nice giant chalk ball too! I am not surprised that the corporation is treating its employees with respects based on their customer service policies. It’d be cool to get a management job there even if it means salary cuts.
Fortune has also compiled comprehensive lists based on categories, such as “Best work/life balance”, “best pay”, “best companies in each state”, etc…

How about coming up with a worst companies to work for list - this would be U.S. companies.
Consider - salary and benefits, management, training, growth opportunities, etc. Are they offshoring resources? And so on.

Followup - Keane consulting would be on the worst list for the aforementioned points.
